A Trip to Underrated Trujillo, Spain: The Less Known, the Better

“Oh, you’ve never heard of that city before? And there’s nothing about it on Trip Advisor? Hmm, well that’s weird. I guess it’s not worth going to…”

WRONG.

When I first heard that our destination was Trujillo, I felt rather apathetic. I hadn’t heard much hype about it, which was somewhat discouraging as I live in Extremadura, the same region that Trujillo is located in. I looked it up on Trip Advisor, and didn’t find much. After all, how great could a city be if Trip Advisor hasn’t already gotten to it? WRONG. The minute I arrived into Trujillo’s city center of Plaza Mayor, I felt as If I had just stepped into a 15th century time warp. With the beautifully preserved and elaborately decorated churches…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA the striking Moorish castle,OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA the huge statue of Peruvian conquistador Francisco Pizarro, OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAand the tiny-narrow cobble stone roads…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I felt like I was in 1430, the year that King Juan II of Castilla gave the little town its name. Or maybe it was still just the wine talking…? Needless to say, the food was excellent. If you go, any restaurant in the main Plaza Mayor will have equivalently high quality, authentic Spanish food. Go with the Menu del Dia and you will eat like a queen as I did, for about 10€. And to top it off, the bar we went to, La Abadía, was one of the coolest bars I have ever been to (and this is coming from a girl who has experienced quite a few of the swankiest nightspots in NYC). You feel like you are in a Medieval castle, mixed with the modernities of funky lighting and high-tech glass bars. And a huge terraza with a view of the whole city and castle. So in conclusion, go to Trujillo if you have the opportunity. And on a larger scale, don’t judge an unheard of city as “not worth the trip” until you see it for yourself! In fact, it’s even more awesome because Trip Advisor hasn’t gotten to it yet. You can discover it before the entire cyber world has. Pretty cool, huh? Check out THE PHOTOS to see more of Trujillo.
